What Lava Bird is

Lava Bird is a one-button flying game with a twist on the flappy formula: every flap also spits a fireball. The credits read "Game by Adam Corey (@Unept)", and Unept is the same name behind Unicycle Hero. The game came out on Poki in October 2019 and plays on desktop as well as phones and tablets.

You fly through a purple cave lined with stalactites and spikes while a flock of angry birds comes after you. The lava you cough up is your only weapon. It shoots out ahead of you and burns any pursuer it hits, but it is just as deadly to you if you fly into it, so every flap creates a hazard you then have to steer around.

Controls

In single-player, press Space or click the mouse to flap, and each press also launches a fireball. On a touch screen you tap instead.

The story mode

Scoring well unlocks a six-part tale called The Ballad of Lava Bird. The first chapter appears once you reach 5 points in a round, and each later chapter asks for 5 more than the one before. The story is told in short, silly lines:

A bird has a medical condition that makes her spew lava whenever she flaps.
Her best friend sends her into the Lava Caves to find a magical cure, and some antacids.
Deep inside she meets a flock hoarding birdseed, accidentally sets their pile on fire and has to flee.
The furious birds chase her through the caves, and each flap of lava takes another one down.

The final part ends on a string of open questions, starting with whether she ever escaped the caves.

Two-player mode

The main menu offers 1P and 2P. In the two-player mode, a red bird and a blue bird share one cave, each player with their own flap key, and on a touch device each player taps their own half of the screen. Rounds are scored, and the first player to reach 5 wins the match.

Tips

Fireballs leave in front of you, and they hurt you as much as the enemies, so keep an eye on the lava you have just spat out.
Points from separate rounds do not add up for the story; only a single strong run moves it forward.
