Big Neon Tower Vs Tiny Square is a precision platformer made by EvilObjective and released in May 2021, part of the Big Tower Tiny Square series. It also came out on Steam and iOS. The look is all glowing neon lines and synth music in a nineties arcade style. The story is told in a few short lines at the start: Big Square has stolen your best friend, Pineapple, and you, Tiny Square, have to climb his neon tower to get Pineapple back and take your revenge.

How to play

• Keyboard: the Arrow keys or A and D move; Space, the Up arrow, Z or W jump; Y sends you back to the last checkpoint; Esc opens the menu.
• Controller: the stick moves, A jumps, Y restarts at the checkpoint and Start opens the menu.
• Phone or tablet: touch buttons on the left side of the screen move you and the button on the right jumps. Tap the top of the screen for the main menu.

The options menu has a Performance switch for smoother play on slow devices and a Zoom switch that brings the camera closer to your square. Both are already on when you play on mobile.

The tower

The whole game is one long climb divided into single-screen sections, with frequent checkpoints so a death never costs much ground. Small Squares stand around the tower and offer advice along the way. The hazards include red neon that zaps you on contact, saws and triangle saws, broken lasers that blink on and off, slow bots (some of them on patrol), security that can spot you, and stretches of water. On the helpful side there are light beams you stick to and can ride, boxes that give a big jump boost or a place to hide from security, and switches that open locked paths. Cherries are scattered along the route as optional collectibles.

Reaching the top is not the end. After the meeting with Big Square at the summit, the route turns around and you have to work your way back down the tower, past changed sections, for the revenge half of the story. The stats screen records your rescue time, revenge time, deaths and cherries.

Tips from the tower

• A light tap on jump gives a short hop; holding it gives the full height.
• To climb a narrow vertical corridor, keep hitting jump. You do not need to hold a direction at the same time.
• Broken lasers flash just before they change, so use the flash to time your move.
• When a path looks shut, search nearby for an unlock switch; there is usually one close by.
• Bots can travel anywhere but move slowly, so keep your distance and keep moving.
