In 4th And Goal 2022 you take the snaps for a pro football side. The studio is Glowmonkey, which has put out many editions of the series (earlier ones include 4th and Goal 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, plus the Linebacker Alley games). This edition went live on Poki in February 2022. You run the offence as the quarterback: pick a play from the playbook, snap the ball, and then either throw to a receiver or carry it yourself for a few more yards.

The game is also playable on phones and tablets; the mobile version draws an on-screen direction pad for movement.

Modes and setup

From the main menu you can start a Quick Game, which is a single championship match, or a Playoff Season, where you pick a team and work through a tournament bracket. Before kick-off you choose your side, a difficulty and the length of the game. Difficulty is not only cosmetic: in the game code each setting uses a different fumble chance. You can also choose the look of the pitch, with options that include black and white, blue, camouflage, dark mode and a USA-themed field. Teams carry pro-style nicknames, among them the Packers, Chiefs, Bears, Cowboys, Eagles, Steelers and Seahawks.

The playbook

The playbook is the heart of the game. On offence you first pick a formation, with sets named Ace, Bunch, Empty, I, Shotgun and Split, and then a play inside it, for example Crack Sweep Left, a halfback off-tackle run or a tight end drag. There is a separate Red Zone page for when you are close to the end zone, a Specials page, and pages for kick-offs and the point after touchdown. The defence has its own formation and coverage pages.

What happens on the field

Plays can end in a touchdown, a field goal, a conversion, a fumble, an interception or a safety, and the game flashes a graphic for each, along with Big Hit and Good D banners on defence. A Game Stats panel lists completions, pass yards, rush yards, total yards, touchdowns and interceptions.

Tips

• Switch to the Red Zone page of the playbook once you are close to the end zone.
• If you keep losing the ball, try a different difficulty setting, as each one has its own fumble odds.
• The Game Stats panel splits pass yards from rush yards, which shows whether your offence is working through the air or on the ground.
