About 3D Bowling

3D Bowling is a bowling game from Famobi, set in a 3D alley drawn to look like a real bowling center. It first appeared on Android in June 2018, and the HTML5 version followed in July 2018, so it runs in a browser on both computers and phones. The game is built with OpenFL, and the whole thing comes down to one skill: rolling the ball so that it knocks over as many pins as possible.

How to roll

Press and hold the left mouse button, drag to swing the ball, and let go to throw it. Once the ball is rolling you still have a little control over its direction, so a throw that drifts slightly off line can be nudged back toward the pins. On a touch screen you use your finger instead of the mouse; the game has a "Tap to start" prompt and a tutorial hand that demonstrates the swipe.

Game modes

ModeWho you play against
Single PlayerNobody: you practice on your own and try to beat your high score.
Versus AIA computer bowler.
2 PlayersA friend playing on the same device.

The game files also include three difficulty icons, separate winner screens for player one and player two, and trophy and firework graphics for the end of a match.

Scoring

A score table on screen uses the usual bowling marks: an X for a strike, when every pin goes down with the first ball, and a slash for a spare, when the second ball clears the pins that were left. Your best results are kept as high scores, so the solo mode doubles as a way to measure how much you have improved.

Tips

  • Use the mid-roll steering for small corrections only. It can move the ball a little, but it will not rescue a throw that is badly off line.
  • Play a few Single Player games before taking on the computer or a friend, so the drag-and-release swing feels familiar.
  • Watch the score table after each ball; it shows straight away whether you scored a strike, a spare or left pins standing.
