About Bad Ice Cream 2

Bad Ice Cream 2 (written Bad Ice-Cream 2 by its makers) is a maze arcade game from the studio Nitrome, originally made in Flash. The browser version now runs through AwayFL, an HTML5 emulator, and was added to Poki in November 2019. You are a scoop of ice cream that refuses to be eaten, dropped into icy arenas full of fruit and monsters. The credits list Giuseppe Longo for art, Romain Macre for programming and Dave Cowen for music.

Controls and goal

• Move with W, A, S, D or the arrow keys.
• Press Q or the space bar to use your freezing power.

Freezing shoots a line of ice blocks out in front of you, and using it again next to an ice line breaks the blocks back down. That one power is both your shield and your shovel: wall off a monster, open a path to fruit that is sealed inside ice, or carve a route out of a dead end. To clear a level you have to collect every piece of fruit before the timer runs out without letting a monster touch you. The game is built for a keyboard, so it is a desktop game.

Flavours, fruit and monsters

Before each game you choose a flavour. The flavour list includes Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Sorbet, Mint choc chip and Bubble Gum. Two players can share one keyboard, either working together on the level or competing, and the result screen can call a draw or declare a winner such as "Vanilla wins!".

The fruit is more varied than in a simple pickup game. Besides bananas, cherries, grapes, kiwi, lemons, oranges, pears, pineapples, strawberries and watermelons, later stages add apples, coconuts, peaches, chillies, carrots, blueberries and coffee. Some fruit refuses to sit still: the game has fruit that walks, jumps, teleports, splits into pieces, buries itself, runs away scared, or drills and melts through ice.

The monsters come with their own tricks too. The cast includes cannons, a volcano, towers, drill creatures, eggs, sponges, logs, a sneezing enemy, a bucket enemy, flying enemies, chasers, big block monsters and breakers in blue, green and yellow that smash through your ice walls.

Special tiles

A help screen introduces the floor features you will meet: hot tiles and campfires that melt ice, arrow tiles that push you in one direction, invisible blocks, an ice floor you slide across, frost tiles, teleporters and speed-up tiles. A pause menu lets you resume, reset the level or quit, and levels are picked from a level select screen with your scores saved.

Tips

• Freeze first, then collect. A quick ice wall between you and a chasing monster buys the seconds you need to grab nearby fruit.
• Watch the breakers. They chew through ice, so against them walls only slow things down; keep moving instead.
• Be careful near hot tiles and campfires, because the ice you build there will not last.
• In two-player co-op, split the arena so you are not chasing the same fruit.
