About Big Tall Small

Big Tall Small is a puzzle platformer by Robert Alvarez, released in November 2020. It is a single-player game, even though you control three characters: a big red block, a tall blue block and a small yellow block. Only one of them moves at a time, and you swap between them whenever you like. A level is finished only when all three have made it into the purple swirl that marks the exit.

The art is simple and flat: coloured blocks with eyes and little legs, white-outlined walls and ledges, and a dark checkered background. The level number sits in the top corner of the screen.

Controls

The first level prints the controls right under the play area:

• Move: W, A and D, or the arrow keys (W or the up arrow jumps).
• Switch character: the down arrow, Space or Enter.
• Reset the level: R.
• Back to the menu: Esc or B.

The game also runs on phones and tablets.

How the puzzles work

Each block has its own size and traits, and the puzzles are about using those differences. The right character has to be in the right place at the right time, and the order in which you move them matters as much as the moves themselves. The first level is a gentle start, with a long ledge, a row of narrow pillars and the exit perched on a raised step.

Levels are picked from a grid on the level select screen. Levels you have not reached yet show a padlock.

Tips

• Before moving anyone, look at where each block needs to end up and which one has to go first.
• Do not leave a block stranded on a ledge it cannot leave; if that happens, press R and start the level again.
• Switching is instant, so swap often to set up a step before the next character moves.
• The exit only counts once every block is inside, so plan the route for the last character too.
