About Zoom Be

Zoom Be (written ZOOM-BE on Poki) is a side-on puzzle platformer from 7Spot Games, a Lithuanian developer and publisher that also makes the Duo Vikings, Duo Survival and Truck Loader series. It is the first game in a trilogy; ZOOM-BE 2 and ZOOM-BE 3 came later. Two zombie friends are locked inside a research facility, and you have to get both of them out of every room together.

The pair are not the same. In the game files one is called Zoom, and his sounds are a running loop and a screech of brakes, so he is the quick one. His partner is the heavier Big B, the one with the kick and the head-scratching idle. A comic strip opens the story and another closes it.

Controls

• Move: A and D, or the left and right arrow keys.
• Jump: W or the up arrow.
• Kick: S or the down arrow.

Poki describes the game as controlling both characters at the same moment, so one set of keys drives the pair. That is the core of the puzzle: both zombies have to reach the exit, and you have to find positions where the same input works for each of them. The game is also available on mobile devices.

What is in the facility

The level files carry descriptive names that show what each room is built around: a tutorial, a room about teamwork, rooms where you push a box or kick one, a stack of boxes, a big box, a bridge, doors you kick open, a room with two elevators, and rooms with a zombie alarm, zombies behind glass and zombie doors. There are about twenty layouts in total. Wooden and metal crates both appear, and the sound set includes an alarm and an emergency siren.

The staff are the obstacles. Security guards patrol with batons, scientists walk the corridors and look around, and other zombies wait in some rooms. The guards and scientists have their own looking-around and running sounds, and Poki's description of the game tells you to avoid getting caught.

Each finished room awards stars, up to three, with a separate jingle when you collect all of them.

Tips

• Before moving, look at where both zombies will land. The same key press moves the pair, so line them up first.
• Several rooms are built around pushing or kicking crates, so treat every box you see as part of the solution.
• Replay early rooms for missing stars once you understand how the guards move.
