What Get On Top is

Get On Top is a two-player wrestling game by Bennett Foddy. It was made in Flash with the Flixel framework and a full physics engine, and it reached Poki in October 2019, where it now runs through an HTML5 player. There is no computer opponent and no story. Two people sit at one keyboard, each controlling a floppy wrestler built from a head, body, arms and legs, and the two fighters are locked together at the hands from the first second. Each player wants to end up on top, and the other one on the floor.

How a point is scored

A round ends the moment one wrestler's head hits the ground. You will hear a crack, the other player takes the point, and the pair resets for the next round. The first player to reach 11 points wins the match, and the game declares either LEFT PLAYER WINS or RIGHT PLAYER WINS. Because both bodies are simulated, nothing is scripted: a shove that looks harmless can tip someone over, and a wild jump can end with both heads heading for the mat at the same time.

Controls

• Left player: W, A, S and D.
• Right player: the four arrow keys.

The direction keys do not walk your wrestler in a neat line. They move your weight forward, backward and upward, which in practice means pushing, pulling and leaping while still holding your opponent's hands. Learning how much force each press puts into your body is most of the game. This is a keyboard game made for desktop, so you need a computer and a friend sitting next to you.

Tips

• Stay low. A wrestler who keeps jumping hands the other player momentum to swing him over; short, controlled presses keep your head away from the floor.
• Use the pull as much as the push. Because your hands are joined, leaning back can drag the other fighter off balance just as well as charging forward.
• Jump at the right moment. Leaping when your opponent is already tilting can carry you over the top and drive his head down.
• Expect the unexpected. The physics means every round plays out differently, so watch the bodies rather than following a fixed plan.
• Agree on a rematch rule before you start. At first to 11, a match can swing back and forth for quite a while.
