What House of Hazards is

House of Hazards is a local party game from New Eich Games, the studio that also made Rooftop Snipers and Getaway Shootout. It came out for web browsers in September 2020. Everyone lives in the same cartoon house and gets a list of ordinary chores, like making a coffee, checking the mailbox or watering the flowers. The catch is that the other people in the house are watching for you to walk into one of their traps, and every player is both doing chores and trying to trip up the rest.

Players and controls

Up to four people can play on one computer. Two share the keyboard and two more can join on pads. If you are alone, the game fills the empty seats with up to three computer-controlled housemates.

On a pad, the left stick moves and changes the hazard choice, the south face button jumps, and the east face button crouches, grabs or triggers. The left-right keys do double duty: besides walking, they change which hazard you have selected.

The hazards

The house is wired against its residents. Lights hang from the ceiling and can be dropped on someone's head. Taps misfire, slices of toast fly out, and lasers can be fired at a housemate. Knocked-out housemates can even be picked up off the floor and shut inside a chest.

Characters

The starting cast is Dom, Marissa, Jerry and Samantha. Four more characters open up as you gain experience: Robo Rob, Buster, Rocking Grandma and Super Sam.

Getting started

• Begin with Time Trial. It is the mode recommended for new players and is the quickest way to learn where each chore is and how the controls feel.
• S for player one (K for player two) covers three actions: crouch, grab a player, and set off the selected hazard.
• No friends nearby? Add up to three computer housemates and play alone.
• Winning means two jobs at once: dodge the tricks aimed at you so your own tasks get done, and use hazards to damage the others.
