Crossy Road — Play Free Online

Crossy Road is the endless hopping game from Hipster Whale, the Australian studio that first released it on phones in 2014. It is built on the old joke about why the chicken crossed the road. The browser edition here is the one published on Poki at the end of 2024, with blocky voxel art and three themed worlds.

How to play

Use the arrow keys or WASD. Up hops one row forward, and left and right step sideways along the row. Each forward hop adds a point, and your score is simply how far you got. A run ends when you are hit, fall into the water or stay put for too long.

That last rule is what keeps you moving. The camera creeps forward on its own, and if you lag behind it a bird of prey dives down and carries you off. In practice you are always balancing two risks: hurry and you misjudge a gap, wait and the screen catches you.

What you have to dodge

• Road traffic. Cars, taxis and trucks run across each lane, usually all in the same direction within a lane, some slow and some fast.
• Trains. A crossing flashes and rings a bell just before a train rushes through.
• Rivers. Water cannot be walked on. You cross by jumping between drifting logs.
• The eagle, which grabs you if you dawdle.

Worlds and characters

There are three worlds. Original has the classic roads and railways. In Space, meteors and asteroids replace the cars and UFOs come for players who hesitate. Dinosaurs fills the lanes with dinosaurs and crocodiles and swaps the eagle for a pterodactyl.

Coins picked up during runs unlock new characters at 100 coins each. Every world has five, and the chicken appears in each one in a different outfit:

• Original: Chicken, Rusty Robot, Lucky Cat, Mallard, Swift Snail.
• Space: Space Chicken, Astronaut, Astronomer, Rover, Space Dog.
• Dinosaurs: Dinosaur Chicken, Dilophosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Stegosaurus, T-Rex.

Tips

• Read the speed of a whole lane before stepping into it, then plan two or three hops at a time instead of one.
• When there is no gap ahead, sidestep into a quieter part of the row rather than standing still and inviting the eagle.
• Board logs near their middle and hop on before the log drifts off the edge of the screen.
• The train bell gives one short warning. Never wait on the rails after it rings.
• Coins are nice, but a coin sitting in a fast lane is rarely worth the run.
