About Earth's Greatest Defender

Earth's Greatest Defender (often searched as Earths Greatest Defender) is a side-on action platformer by Rémi Vansteelandt, the developer behind SuperBrawl and Ninja vs EVILCORP. Aliens have landed, and your soldier fights them with guns, grenades and a grappling hook while rescuing human hostages. The browser version came out in May 2024, and the build itself announces that the full game reached Early Access on Steam after close to two years of work.

Movement is the heart of it. The grappling hook lets you swing across gaps, pull yourself up to ledges and move away from enemies.

Controls

• Move: WASD or the arrow keys. A tutorial prompt explains that holding the jump key makes you jump higher.
• Shoot: left mouse button.
• Grappling hook: hold the right mouse button.
• Grenade: hold the mouse wheel, or press G.
• Switch weapon: hold the mouse wheel and scroll, or press a number key.

The game also runs on phones and tablets, in portrait or landscape, and the desktop settings include a pointer-lock option.

Modes

The main menu offers several ways to play:

• Campaign: a run of story levels. Before starting you pick a difficulty: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard or Unstoppable.
• Speedrun mode: the campaign against the clock. The in-game notes call it the real test once you think you have mastered the grappling hook.
• Challenge levels: extra hard stages kept apart from the campaign.
• Multiplayer: deathmatch rounds against other players, with an option for the room leader to add bots.
• Level Editor: build and test your own stages. The game warns that the editor is meant for advanced users.

There is also a Berzerk mode toggle and an Arsenal screen where you unlock weapons, plus medals and a weekly top-players board.

Stages you will see

Level names stored in the build include Cleaning up the neighborhood, Cutting through the sewers, Toxic facility, Slime Facility, Elevator shafts, Race against lava, Crossing the lava pit, Lava tower, Night ruins, Snowy Brawl, Mountainous getaway, Playing with artillery and Treating the source, plus an Epilogue. Levels have checkpoints, and a Reload Checkpoint option sends you back to the last one.

Tips

• The tutorial prompts teach the jump, the hook, weapon switching and grenades one at a time, so read them rather than skipping ahead.
• One of the game's own loading tips says to use explosive barrels to your advantage, so look for them before a big fight.
• Difficulty is picked per campaign run, so a stage that keeps beating you can be retried on an easier setting.
• Grenades are bound to their own button, so you can throw one without switching away from your current gun.
